ARCO FLUTE FOUNDATION, "Everything After the Bomb Is Sci-Fi" on the Inside
Track, Wednesday 9 p.m.
The third offering from this Edinboro, PA ensemble is a pleasing
excavation into moody soundcapes, striking a deft balance between
climactic space rock on the order of Mogwai and more abstract approaches
that are trickier to place one's finger on yet equally capable of tickling
the fancy. Out on Pittsburgh's Cenotaph Audio.
SAD SONGS on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9 p.m.-midnight
As Elton John so fittingly penned, "Sad songs say so much." On July 25,
the TNF hopes to do just that by playing a bevy of "sad" tunes about art,
love, politics, religion and the like with a few songs thrown in just for
the
sad bastard in all of us. The approach is lyrical so even if it sounds
happy, it probably isn't. Break out your hankies, folks, this one is a
doozy. The tears just may come a-callin'.
Various Artists, "QUEENS OF KING: THE KING GIRL GROUPS" on the Inside
Track, Friday 9 p.m.
Cincinnati label King was a giant in the country & western and rhythm &
blues markets from the '40s until the late '60s, but one oft-overlooked
facet of the label's stable were its female doo wop groups, who hailed
from all over the U.S. This reissue compilation, released on UK label Ace,
collects the best of King's girl groups of the early '60s, including
heretofore collectible sides from acts like the Charmettes,
the Bobbettes and the Shondells.
BAD COMPANY, "Bad Company" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
1974 debut album of the British supergroup that coalesced when Mick Ralphs
took his guitar from the shards of Mott the Hoople and joined forces with
Paul Rodgers, who had provided those trademark vocals for Free. They
brought in Simon Kirke (also from Free) to keep time, and bassist Boz
Burrell (previously a vocalist for King Crimson). Bad Company was the
first band signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label, and this album
handily met the challenge.
Timely topics with TODD on Northern Hemisphere Live, Sunday 5-7 pm.
This Sunday NHL's and Spectator magazine's Todd will host an open show
with sundry topics relating to the current events of the day. Listeners
are invited to call in and participate.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE on the Backyard BBQ, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
Join us this Sunday on the Backyard BBQ, when in addition to the usual
North Carolina music, local trio Choose Your Own Adventure will come by
the studio to talk about and play music from some of their favorite bands.
Choose Your Own Adventure performs at Local 506 that night.
Various Artists, "BADENYA: Manden Jaliya in New York City" on the Inside
Track, Monday 9 p.m.
The third installment in Smithsonian Folkways' Global Beat of the Boroughs
series, this compilation offers a glimpse of the current musical
activities of a network of West African immigrants from Mali, Gambia and
Guinea, who trace lineage back to the ancient musical caste jalilu dating
from the thirteenth century Malian empire. Rootsy mixed ensemble
selections featuring bala, kora, n'goni and other traditional
instruments appear alongside intimate solo and duet performances.
