PENTAGRAM's "First Daze Here: The Vintage Collection" on the Inside Track,
Wednesday 9 p.m.
One of the most enduring and influential underground bands in heavy metal
history, Pentagram formed in Virginia in 1971 and went on to make a
substantial impact on the metal genre, despite its relative
obscurity. "First Daze Here: The Vintage Collection" unearths the band's
rare singles and even rarer studio recordings, recorded between 1973 and
1974 by the group's original lineup. On Relapse Records.

A TRIBUTE TO MERGE RECORDS on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
This week's TNF will pay tribute to one of the finest independent music
labels today and one of our own local favorites: Merge Records. Tune in
for in-depth discussion on the past, present, and future of Merge with Mac
MacCaughan, one of Merge's two co-founders (also of Superchunk and
Portastatic). Other Merge executives and artists, including members of
Shark Quest and Ashley Stove, will be on hand to discuss the label and the
current state of the music industry. And of course, we will be spinning
some of the great music that Merge has been releasing since 1989.

GENUINE ELECTRIC LATIN LOVE MACHINE FEATURING DJ JESTER THE FILIPINO
FIST, "Introducing the Neat Beat" on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
San Antonio turntablist DJ Jester has been at it since 1998. And that's
all we know!

THE FIDDLER'S GROVE FESTIVAL on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
On Hell or High Water this week, we'll hear a 1974 recording of the 50th
anniversary of the Fiddlers' Grove festival. Held every Memorial Day
Weekend in Union Grove, NC, for 78 continuous years, the Ole
Time Fiddlers and Bluegrass Festival focuses on traditional American
music. This dedication has earned the event a reputation as one of the
most prestigious and authentic fiddling competitions in the United
States. In May 2000, Fidder's Grove received the Local Legacy award from
the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. More than 50 traditional bands
in old time and bluegrass divisions (junior and senior categories) vie for
the festival's covted awards.

CAROLE KING, "Tapestry" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
This week's show will feature Carole King's "Tapestry," an album which
entered the charts in March of 1971 and stayed there for six years. This
beautiful record, one of the best-sellers of all time, helped launch the
singer/songwriter genre of the 1970s -- indirectly bolstering the careers
of James Taylor, Todd Rundgren and Carly Simon, among others.

A discussion of timely topics with BILL AND TODD on Northern Hemisphere
Live, Sunday 5-7 p.m.
This Sunday NHL will feature the monthly installment from long-time hosts
Bill and Todd. No guests are scheduled, just open, freewheeling
conversation and batting around of issues, complaints, and improbable
stories from the news -- plus active audience participation through phone
calls about anything that happens to be on your mind.

TRANSPORTATION on The Backyard Barbeque, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
This Sunday on the Backyard BBQ, we'll be moved by members of
Transportation, an extremely versatile group (they each take turns on
drums, bass, and guitar) who have been a part of the Chapel Hill indie
scene since 1997. Before morphing into the trio that is Transportation,
the three played together cohesively and consistently since 1992. They're
on the verge of releasing their first CD, cuts from which we'll be making
public for the first time ever. Keep an eye out for their May 11 show at
Local 506 as well.

GARY WILSON's "You Think You Really Know Me" on the Inside Track, 9 p.m.
Gary Wilson's eccentric, lo-fi "You Think You Really Know Me" may be one
of the most influential albums of the late '70s. Wilson recorded the album
(his only release) in his parents' basement long before lo-fi recordings
were hip. Though it never had mass appeal, it greatly influenced artists such
as Beck. The album, ahead of its time in its use
of sound effects and synthesizers and its electro-funk tendencies, has
achieved cult status. Now Motel Records has rereleased it for a new
generation to appreciate.

Also this week and every week:

Friday, 9 p.m.
-ORANGE COUNTY SPECIAL: traditional and neo-traditional music of the world
Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m
