'XYC XMASsacre Xtravaganza, Monday, Dec. 17, 3-9 p.m.
Get aurally primed for the holiday season this Monday with the 'XYC
XMASsacre Xtravaganza! Pack for home, bake cookies, go shopping, trim the
tree, bask in the light of the menorah -- whatever your holiday
pleasure--while listening to 6 hours of the best holiday music on the
planet. From Gene Autry and AC/DC to Weird Al Yankovic and Woofing
Cookies, it doesn't get better than this! (Requests are definitely
welcome; e-mail title & artist to wxyc AT unc.edu in advance of the show if
you like.) Happy Holidays to all!

JIM WATSON live on the Orange County Special, Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Mandolinist Jim Watson, a member of the Original Red Clay Ramblers, will
stop by the studio to perform and chat. Jim's second solo album, Willie's
Redemption, has just been released on his own Barker label. For more
information, visit http://members.tripod.com/~RedClayRamblers.

THE LA'S on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Coming on the heels of The Smiths, The La's nearly emerged as the next big
jangly guitar rock band before suffocating under the obsessive
perfectionism of frontman Lee Mavers. Still, their early singles "Way
Out" (1987) and "There She Goes" (1988) paved the way for Madchester acts
like The Stone Roses, The Charlatans UK, and (sad but true) Oasis. Join
host Tom this Sunday as we enjoy a remastered rendition of The La's 1990 LP
as well as a few b-sides and live tracks.

A discussion of the musical phenomenon of SELLING OUT on Northern
Hemisphere Live, Sunday 5-7 p.m.
Your local favorite band, the same guys you see in Harris Teeter once a
week, are suddenly plastered on the cover of Newsweek discussing their new
multi-million dollar album deal with their new uber-label, Big Dawg
Records. Big Dawg is a powerhouse and the boys ride the moneytrain all the
way to the bank. But their shows are now full of teeny boppers and 14 year
old girls who you know for a fact never heard the 1989 album "i love being
indie", a personal favorite. The new album, in fact, pales in comparison
to the classic tunes you used to love, and seeing them live is more a
hassle than pleasure. Instead of championing "your" band to friends who
have never heard them, you cringe whenever their name comes up on Top 40
radio and slide their cds way back in your collection next to Ben Folds
Five and Green Day. Listeners are welcome to call in and participate.

Also this week and every week:
-THE INSIDE TRACK: a new release played in full Monday, Wednesday and
Friday, 9 p.m.
-ORANGE COUNTY SPECIAL: traditional and neo-traditional music of the world
Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m
-HELL OR HIGH WATER: music from UNC's Southern Folklife Collection Sunday
1-2 p.m.
-CLASSIC INSIDE TRACK: a classic release in full, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
-BROKEN MUSIC: longer, more "difficult" pieces Sunday 3-4 p.m.
-MAKING CONTACT and COUNTERSPIN: news programs from F.A.I.R. (Fairness and
Accuracy In Reporting) Sunday 4-5 p.m.

from Chapel Hill's finest, as well as older records from N.C. bands of the
past, Sunday 7-8 p.m.
-THE NEW MUSIC SHOW: spotlight on new releases right out of the mail bin,
Sunday 8-9 p.m.
