NORTH CAROLINA ROCKABILLY on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 9
p.m.-midnight
This week the Thursday Night Feature focuses on 1950s & '60s North
Carolina rockabilly. Host Franz will play from rare 45s and reissues
beginning in the late 1940s with Arthur Smith's "Guitar
Boogie" (considered by many the first rock guitar instrumental, if not
the first rock'n'roll song) and ending with early garage waxings by
members of Mickey "Bip Bop Bip" Hawks' Night Raiders. We'll also get
inside labels like Chapel Hill's Colonial Records, with artists like
George Hamilton IV and John D. Loudermilk, as well as Durham's Renown
label and the famous Oak label from Elm City -- the subject of an entire
reissue compilation. We may get into a few borderline rock/garage
releases too, just to vary things a bit. We won't be able to feature every
known N.C. rockabilly artist (too costly an enterprise, that) but this
will serve as an excellent introduction to the Old North State's finest
hillbilly boogie and country bop.

MAPPAMUNDI live on the Orange County Special, Sunday noon-1 p.m.
This week, members of Mappamundi will be visiting the Orange County
Special to sing, play, and chat with us. Mappamundi means "Map of the
World" in 15th century Italian, and the band specializes in
"more or less traditional music of the Northern Hemisphere and the
previous millennium." They have just released their first CD, entitled
"World Music Our Way." Visit their Web site at www.mappamundi.com/skylark
for more information.

BULL CITY BLUES on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
Most locals know that Durham is famous for its blues legacy. But if
you haven't actually *heard* any of the music that put the Bull City on
the map - or if you'd enjoy hearing it again - tune in to Hell or High
Water this Sunday. We'll hear from musicians like Blind Boy Fuller, Sonny
Terry, Brownie McGhee and Blind Gary Davis, who earned national acclaim
for Durham's remarkable blues community in the 1920s-1940s.

GEORGE HARRISON on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
The second CIT installment of George Harrison's 1970 triple-album
masterpiece "All Things Must Pass." ATMP features some of Harrison's best
loved songs including "My Sweet Lord," "Isn't It a Pity," and of course
the title track. Much of the material was written during the later days of
the Beatles and reflects how George at times could write music to equal
that of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting team. ATMP was produced by the
legendary Phil Spector and features contributions from Bob Dylan, Eric
Clapton, Ginger Baker, Phil Collins, Billy Preston and Ringo Starr, among
others.

A discussion of U.S. ACTIONS TOWARD IRAQ on Northern Hemisphere Live,
Sunday 5-7 p.m.
This week NHL will explore the question of whether the U.S. should
attack Iraq as part of its war on terrorism. Hosts Tom, Darren and Mike
have wide-ranging opinions on the subject, which will be complemented by
those of guests from UNC's political science and history
departments. Listeners are welcome to call in and participate.

DRUM AND BASS on the New Science Experience, Sunday 10 p.m.-midnight
This week the New Science Experience will feature a solid two hours of
drum and bass night with DJ Slipstream of Radiance spinning atmospheric
jungle from 10-11 p.m. and WXYC's own One Duran spinning "wakestep" from
11 p.m.-midnight.

Also this week and every week:

Friday, 9 p.m.
