This Sunday March 21 on Broken Music (3-4 PM EST) we will be listening to
one of two things...

If its raining, cold, or generally grey and gloomy in Chapel Hill we'll be
listening to music from the astonishing Romanian composer Iancu
Dumitrescu. The weather contingency program is due to the fact that this
is some pretty dark, heavy stuff that really sounds best at night... but
Broken Music is on in the afternoon so I'm saving it for such a day.
Dumitrescu's music is better heard than described, so I'll just say that
he's considered to be at the forefront of electroacoustic/sound
exploration type music and is doing some of the most advanced stuff in
that general field while at the same time projecting an emotional quality
often missing in the genre. He was nice enough to send us 2 of his CDS,
and you don't hear 'em around here often, so tune in if you're interested.

Otherwise, we'll be hearing from the Anthony Braxton Quartet's Willisau
1991 4CD set. This is a big one from one of the most acclaimed jazz
quartets of the past 30 years (w/ Mark Dresser, Marilyn Crispell, and
Gerry Hemingway). We'll hear from one of the two live CDs, which go
continuously w/o pauses for an hour or so, so its just right for the
Broken Music hour.

Whichever one doesn't get played this week will show up in the near
future... Questions/comments/suggestion to wyork AT email.unc.edu
