Not quite the early-'80s period you requested, but there's an early-'90s band called Confetti who were (or must've been) deliberate YMG soundalikes. There's a CD on Vinyl Japan, now maybe out of print, that collects most or all of their stuff, I believe. One of their singles was three Wedding Present covers performed in the YMG style...
