Ut's first official recorded output was meant to be a tape on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label in 1980. It never happened because Ball went AWOL. However, their first self-released cassette (Live 1981) came out in 1981.

Their 1984 UT EP —which features the absolutely peerless A-side pairing of "Sham Shack" and "The Bliss"— is an excellent place to start one's education in the band. I only wish "This Bliss" was more widely available. "Sham Shack" can of course be found on the 2nd volume of Soul Jazz' "New York Noise."

Their music is criminally underrated. Mark Sinker once characterized them as a band who, at their best, "snatch[ed] grace out of disaster." It's a marvelously evocative phrase, because it precisely captures the knife's-edge of tension that the band consistently and compellingly walked during their existence. And if that sometimes made them seem a bit isolated or isolating —aloof even— it's because they were hewing resolutely to their own path. And it seems clear from this vantage point (nearly 20 years after the release of their masterpiece In Gut's House) that they knew precisely what they were doing. It was the rest of us who were slow in catching up.

Hey All; and, Dina;
Do you mean that Ut can't be on the list because it's post-1985?
Ut played Tier 3 half a dozen times in 1980.  FYI, so did many of the bands
on the list: The Raincoats, The Slits, ESG, X, Bush Tetras, Y Pants, Delta
5, Young Marble Giants, and, for that matter, Malaria and The Dance. (Just
tooting the old horn..)
Lydia Lunch also performed there in 8 Eyed Spy and Devil Dogs--she's GOT to
be on the list, but in which incarnation, I'm not sure---obviously there
have to be recordings--and I'm not sure there were with Devil Dogs, or
Beirut Slump etc.  So what up--Teenage Jesus, 8 Eyed Spy?

Hilary

The 2 UT reissues that I have are dated past 1984 (for their original
release dates). That clears up my perplexitites thoough.

We've got Lydia Lunch on the list under the reissue fo the No New York
compilation. (Too bad the Wanna Buy a Bridge reissue fell through...)

While STATEMENT and REAL WOMAN and a number of other Poison Girls
releases are only showing on Amazon.com as available through private
sellers, I did notice this...

http://www.amazon.com/Their-Finest-Moments-Poison-Girls/dp/B000024QJ8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/105-0659839-8988438?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1181008124&sr=1-2

which looked promising as an intro to this anarcho-punk-feminist group
fronted by a woman old enough to be today's 12-15 year old girls'
great-granny (and, in the time these recording were initially made,
would have been the right age to be their mother).

I saw the Dangerous Birds back on Mar. 30, 1983 at "Folk City" in
Manhattan, New York. Some day I'll scan the 35 mm negatives of the
photos that I took of that show and add it to my concert photo website.

More great OOP material. I hope someone is taking notes here!  :-)

Also a shame that Dangerous Birds (boston band) only had one single
out 'cause it's a great one ("Alpha Romeo").  Someone from the band
(not Thalia) told me that there's an album's worth of demos lying around.

Does someone want to pick out a CD to recommend for Romeo Void? I only remember their song from the TV show Square Pegs (and I adored both the song and the show)!

If anybody is interested, I have photos of these concerts at "The Mudd
Club":

Nov. 14, 1981 --> Girls At Our Best
Jan.  2, 1982 --> Bow Wow Wow

Those photos are among the 8,700 photos that I took of bands in the New
York City area between 1981 and 1985. I need to get those 35 mm
negatives scanned and then added it to my concert photo website. I have
been trying for over a year to find a place in the New York City area to
get the scanning job done (I don't have the time to do the scanning
myself). I tried small batches of negatives with several camera and
photography stores but either the quality was poor or they took too long
or the price was too much. Can anybody recommend somebody who can do
this large job in high quality at a reasonable price?

Hello Merrill,

My name is Shan Nicholson, I got your email address from your post on
the"typical girls" news letter.

I am also a film maker who is working on a documentary on NYC's night
life during the late 70's early 80's .As a part of the story we are
covering places like Hurras and the Mudd clubb and the bands that played
there. We are also focusing on the art,hip hop and dance music scene as
well.

Was wondering if we might be able to help each other out. I am currently
in the process of raising a budget for music and footage clearence and
you might have footage of a couple bands that we are planning on
covering. On the other hand,I have been working on this documentary for
about 2 years now and along the way I have acumillated a long list of
contacts, some of these contacts might be usefull to you.

Below is a link to a teaser we put together, check it out and let me know
what you think. We have been using the clip as a promotional tool to get
people interested in the project. By the way,did you put out that video
compilation "live at Hurras"?

Thanks for your time,

-Shan
