Excellent point. I think that miking the amp would emphasize the "scapiness" of the sound. Most violinists who go electric seem to like to use a direct box, which makes for a smoother, rounder tone, which is the opposite of what you're looking for. You might try emphasizing the high end on the amp as well. The (especially early) Raincoats sound is very trebly.
I've read that Vicki Aspinall was classically trained, but on the first album, she seems to play as if she were a beginner, leaning off pitch sometimes (on purpose for effect I assume) and flying up and down the neck of the instrument at random. (Those outrageous instrumental breaks on "You're A Million" or "In Love", for instance.) Very free, who-cares-if-it's-perfect, punk rock violin. Which is why we love that sound to this day.

The sound might also be achieved by putting a pickup on the violin, connecting to an amp, and then placing a microphone in front of the amp.

I'm no violinist or violin expert, but I think it's mainly a result of
bowing very roughly/aggressively. Diane Wallis (ex-She Mob, ex-Content
Providers) gets a similar sound when she plays.
