I had this problem at work with a p4 cpu.

Xorg doesn't seem to like gcc 3.4.3 optimizations, I fixed that by
editing host.def and removing all of the CFLAGS (first 5 lines iirc).

low had this problem as well, and give me the clue.

That fixed the signal 11 crash. It took me a while before figuring out
what was wrong (including changing drivers, and card !).
