They are not missing. Try info -f tar.
If you type only info tar then info tray to search top node and this top
node is missing.
so put this line into your ~/.bashrc and everything shoud be allright:
alias info='info -f'

This is exactly what I have done. So what exactly has this done? It
took forever to compile...:)

Now that it is done, is there any reason to redo it without the Java
or is it fine as it is? What exactly do these do anyway?

I have the same man page problem with tar, but my info file is fine.

I recompiled again, several times, resummoned, man page is corrupted,
info is back though
