Thanks, I shall try that this evening ...

Has anyone here succesfully compiled Standard ML of New Jersey on a
Source Mage system?

I've tried to, but I keep getting problems during the bootstrap phase
of the whole thing. It seems that the heap-image or whatever is for an
older version of gcc/glibc or some other system library.

While I do not have the error message handy right now, I'll be happy
to reproduce it, if someone out there thinks it'll help.

After a long break, I decide to try the 2.5.xx kernel again.
Recent versions of this require a new module-init-tools as well as modutils.

I wrote a spell for this and installed to /usr/sbin.

the various tools work ok when I invoke them manually, but if I boot the
2.5.xx kernel, the networking script finds the old modprobe and doesn't load
the network driver

booting 2.4.20 works ok

I suspect that I need an integrated modutils + module-init-tools spell

has anyone else tried this?

also, fsck seems very slow under 2.5.65, especially dosfsck. Has anyone
noticed this?

I have only recently been able to get 2.5.66 to compile (the prior
versions I couldn't, but I used different options, so.. ;)), and it then
wouldn't even boot, just got stuck after decompressing the kernel.

The updated modutils, do you mean just the version needs updating? If so,
there's already a bug report for that
(http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2905). And the mod-init, it
sounds as though that coexists fine with 2.4.20? If so, I might try it,
is it available anywhere?.
