I posted with a similar problem earlier and was told that I just have to
save my sound state once it's working. Every time I reloaded X-Windows
(didn't mather whether I closed/re-opened xmms in a session), I had to
open the configuration of xmms and change my sound to use/not use "PCM as
Master" in the "OSS Configuration" for "Audio I/O". Once I switched it
from whichever it was (didn't matter which one, as long as it went
opposite, so I kept switching between the two ;)) I would have sound.
Have you tried this? I'm not sure if this works as I haven't tried saving
my sound state since then (don't play music much), but if it does, please
tell us! :)

Hope this helps,
