Better yet, does anyone know how to turn the screen blanking off
entirely?

man setterm

-blank [0-60] (virtual consoles only)
Sets the interval of inactivity, in minutes, after which the
screen will be automatically blanked (using APM if available).
Without an argument, defaults to 0 (disable console blanking).

so I guess "setterm -blank 0" should do it. (It's also suggested that if you want to permanently do away with it you need to remove "APM console blanking" from the kernel, but the setterm thingy should do it.)

You could add a line to /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh for this, it may be set somewhere else, termcap or somewhere.
