If the rescue CD has a static bash on it, it would be simple to just mv
/mnt/root/bin/bash somewhere, then cp the static bash there... and
presto chango, you have a working chroot.
busybox has normal shell stuff as well as tar and thing I believe. ash
is another small shell that could be considered. I have not used either.
