I would prefer that instead of fix the symptom, we fix the problem.
The problem is that the spell is not getting the version variable. So maybe we make that a special case system wide variable, configurable in sorcery, that the sorcery spell sets if it isnt already set.
A while back there was a discussion about systemwide variables settable by spells. It was stated that they were unneeded because of triggers and such. This is a situation where it is needed. If there is another way to do it, please do. Otherwise, we need to find a solution in sorcery.
I don't want to go back to split sorcery spells. It doesn't make sense to do it that way.

As many of you know, there have been many problems with the sorcery spell
in branch 0.8.x
For one, the version on the currently installed spell is mixed up, depending
on which application checks. Some look for SORCERY_VERSION, some get the
installed packaged file to get the version which was set in the spells DETAILS
file.
During a cast, the version is seen as what's currently installed, it's
registered in the install file, and then the new tarball is installed
which is a newer version. So it's all mixed up.
The format of the grimoire, and the tools used to manage it (cast specifically)
are just not able to support the flexibility we (as in not just me :) tried
to implement.
Perhaps we should just bite the bullet, make two spells - sorcery-devel &
sorcery-stable.
sorcery-stable is bumped up with updated spells, hardcoded versions, the
"old fashioned" way.
sorcery-devel uses a forced download mechanism, (every 24 hours, download
a fresh tarball), the VERSION is set at 'devel' and the spell pretty much
never needs to be updated unless theres a change to the spell.
Comments?
