Might want to look through the documentation on the Linux From Scratch
site. They have howtos on various popular programs, lots of example
scripts. The complete LFS-BOOTSCRIPTS file is there as well.

You mean the idea of doing this stuff after compile was discarded?

We don't already have a chkconfig spell, eh? Hmm. I'm having trouble
finding the source... fastcoder.net and buttsoft.net both appear to be
defunct.
