So you still think that this is a high priority issue with only one fix, and
that there can not possibly be any problems with that solution, ever. I remain
unconvinced and have given you my argument. Do you even see what Im trying to
tell you as rational? Do any of the things Im saying make sense to you? Or do
you think Im somehow treating this bug irrationally and unfairly?

If you dont like hardlinks, there is still the workaround, you can manually
replace the symlinks, or write a script to do it. Its not that hard.

Create a file that lists your intended links
cat << EOF > /etc/links
/etc/ldap.conf /etc/ldap/ldap-client.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf.local
EOF

Run this after cast to restore them...
while read line; do ln -s $line; done < /etc/links

You need to check your config files dont need modifications to work with the
latest software version anyway. So this is a step you need to take in some
way,
regardless.

There are two outcomes, yes, reap or not. But there are four scenarios each of
which must make that decision. The distinction is not that its a config file,
it
is whether or not it is a modified config file, or not. You contend there is
no
value in the symlink distinction, yet a symlink is not the same as a file.
All I
have been saying this entire time is more thought needs to be put into the
proper behavior and potential pitfalls of this. Just saying you think that
theres no value in it doesnt really get us anywhere. We have to explore what
problems can exist, or posit that nothing could ever possibly go wrong.

Im not seeing a lot of justification that "nothing could ever possibly go
wrong". All Im getting is that you are completely dissatisfied with any
workaround, for reasons of personal taste, and that the only solution is the
one
you have suggested. Do you assert that your solution is devoid of any and all
problems? (yes/no, if yes, justify) Do you accept as a valid question to ask,
"does your solution have any potential problems?" (yes/no, if no, then why?).
