I don't think the argument is that this shouldn't get addressed, only that it
needs more thought and the priority isn't as high as claimed because in this
particular case hardlinks are viable workaround and arguably what you should
be
using anyway. Whether you like the cosmetic aspects of them or not, this is
what they're for. You can see them in the ls output regardless; one of the
standard columns in ls -l is the number of links pointing to the given inode.
The config file you're using is the one with 2 links.

There are definitely 4 cases, not 2. Claiming there are 2 continues to ignore
that there may be a point to retaining the information that they are
symlinks.
For example, what if the link target is gone? Your suggested change continues
to assume we should reap this, but maybe that isn't the right behavior either.
