If he wants to manage the files from another location but wants the /etc one
to
be keep current with the data, and using a symlink doesn't work right now for
this, is there a reason he can't just use a hard link instead as a workaround?
Typically symlinks are used because you only want one actual hard link so if
you
remove that one and have the file go away. If his entire point is that he
doesn't want the file to go away, using a hard link shouldn't harm him.
The other advantages of symlinks are mostly cosmetic; as long as he knows how
he
sets it up this shouldn't matter much.
