I'm sorry but I still got something to say. I think you have missed my
point (or I didn't make it clear enough, anyway.) It's not the minor
version differences that I care about now. I actually liked your
proposal of simplifying the release process, and I'm glad that it has a
good result, but the idea of limiting access to devel (read: WIP)
grimoire for existing developers really bugs me.

I firmly believe that it really wouldn't hurt to make the development
process more open to the public, provided that there's a clear warning
that what's WIP - and there surely is! I myself have seen the warning
lots of times, the first of which can be traced back to more than half a
year before (don't remember when, but IIRC it was by Eric Sandall,
mentioning "playground" etc.) but I was still using devel, just because
I wanted to see other people's up-to-date work (and participate
occasionally when I have time, though it wasn't frequent at all.) I
considered joining the team several times but didn't think I had enough
time and will, so I choosed to stay as a normal user and only do some
random contributions.

I don't think I'm the only one around who would like to contribute but
are not yet ready to join. Limiting access to devel grimoire for
existing developers can really deter the would-be developers from
joining in. Also, when I was checking out a new distro I was often more
interested in what they are up to than what they already have, so it may
also reduce potential users who were just randomly browsing.

With the coming of the CVS server this issue should be resolved -
provided that there's anonymous access. I'm not just speaking for
myself. I'll join when I'm fed up, but that's because I don't see any
alternative. Our other cousins are both looking so dead; I don't want to
see the distro die.
