Well, right now I can't boot into 2.6.0-test1 when I compile devfs support
into the kernel - I get a kernel panic because it is unable to open /dev/hda3
as the root device. 2.4.21 still boots fine on the same system...

I have recently tried to try out kernel 2.5.75 and after a few
small hiccups I found reference to module_init_tools to be
installed.

This has not helped me in my quest to have modules loaded.
Am I missing something?

After cast it advises that you run depmod 2.5.75
This didn't appear to do anything but display some information
on screen.

I still receive error about QM_MODULE.

Do I need to perform other tasks?

I also had the problem with 2.5.75 and 2.6.0-test1; ie, the QM_MODULE one. I tried reinstalling(casting) modul-init-tool several times. Finally I copied the tarball to /tmp and installed it manually, following the instructions in the tarball; makeold, move in module.devfs, etc. This fixed the QM_MODULE problem. Note I started everytime with a fresh copy of /sbin from my old installation, the one with the 'modutils' installed.

I also converted this copy of SMGL(2.6.x is is not my main system yet) to devfs. At the moment I am not too happy with devfs in 2.6.x. It works(?), but I am not exactly happy with a few things. JohnC

Another point guys for module loading. The new modprobe uses /etc/modprobe.conf not /etc/modules.conf. The syntax appears the same so a "cp" should work. THIS FROM THE KERNEL MAILING LISTS.
