I took a look at how nvidia's own installer does its job. It works like it
should, actually it's very nice. It can be told to run in command line
without any menus, so it's pretty much out-of-the-box SMGL compatible. Also
the spell is light as a butterfly when the complicated stuff is left for the
installer to worry about. But...
The installer won't run in X if the nvidia module is already in use. This
also
brings another worry, because the installer has to be called from INSTALL,
otherwise sorcery won't track what it installs. And when INSTALL is launched,
a dispel has already taken place. So, if nvidia-installer then refuses
cooperation, it leaves the user without nvidia_driver.
That could be avoided with a check to see if X is using nvidia. What would be
the best way to do that?
Still, there's no business casting nvidia_driver in X. I tried to go around
it, but even with --no-kernel-module it still won't let you install in X.
