Oh, that would explain it. If your going to be working on that, I guess it wouldn't hurt for me to list other problems that I had... I'm not familiar with mythtv either, but perhaps this will help you.
When I first attempted to start mythfrontend, I received some kind of message (I think it mentioned QMYSQL3 or something like that). I typed cast -r -c qt-x11 and added the -qt-sql-mysql option to configure and the error went away.
I can't start mythbackend without a setup program, but I can now get the frontend to start. I tried using mythdvd and got an error message about mplayer not being found. cast mplayer fixed that and I can now watch dvd's through mythtv.
The bug report mentions that the mythtv spell does not install a database directory. The only reference to a database directory that I'm seeing in mythtv's documentation is here:
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.4
It looks like Gentoo linux puts the database directory at:
/usr/share/mythtv/database

I still haven't gotten my tv tuner working under source mage, but if you'd like any help testing out changes to the spell, let me know,
