the /etc/securetty file lists terminals from which root can login. because we
have a slightly quirky setup for devices the LFS suggestion won't work.
here's the contents of my file:

/devices/vc/1
/devices/vc/2
/devices/vc/3
/devices/vc/4

this will allow root to log in from the 1st 4 virtual consoles.

i have also found that the pam setup for kde seems to have some problems.
when
pam is enabled i cannot authenticate myself as root using kdm or when the
screen is locked. i renamed /etc/pam.d/kde to /etc/pam.d/kde.old and this
fixed the problem, although i suspect it's a gaping security hole. if anyone
knows how to fix this i'd like to know :)

i hope this helps, pam is nice and it seems a shame not to use it, despite
the
niggles.
