My comment here is not about the correctness of your pushed commits, but
only on commit workflow. This is why we have git. You can commit locally
(ideally to a local branch, but even without branching there is git
stash which uses branch trickery to make it look like the work is
magically saved in the air) and not worry about accidentally pushing WIP
commits back upstream when you are also pushing other work. This will
let you save what you are working on so that you have time to come back
to it and make sure it's ready for upstream before sharing it with
everyone else.

In the words of so many gitters (including I believe Linus himself),
"branches are cheap". Use them. :)
