Unfortunately the land is flat. There are better solutions on sloped land.
Under the tree canopy there is no plastic, only gravel to cut down on water
evaporation from the soil. The basin slopes slightly toward the tree and
there is a small berm at 3+ canopy diameters out from the trunk.
The seedling test trials include canopy/root system width ratio looking for
better adaption to semi-desert. The pinyons and cottonwoods have ratios of
3 while commercial varieties of fruit and nuts are 1.
