Just about ALL compost tea / extract brewers are vortex brewers if the air
is being pumped in the bottom of the tank.

Make sure the compost sits in the air bubble stream, casuing hte compost to
stay mixing all the time in the water. Do not let compaction occur. You
want to be able to see ALL the surfaces that the tea or extract touch in
the brewing time. If you can't see the surfaces of any part of the brewer,
then you can't tell if biofilm and anaerobic conditions are developing, and
you could be having some serious problems.

Take the on-line Introduction to the Microscope course we offer on
lifeinthesoil.com so you can check your tea, compost and extract. You
don't have to quantify things, you just need to know there are just aerobic
organisms, and lots of fungi in the compost, extracts and tea. OK?

Hi Elaine
Any experience using a vortex brewer for doing an compost extract?
Does it provide the right motion? Made my own, DO is what it should be
for my altitude
and temperture. Don't have a microscope, use worm castings fed horse
manure and
some fed vegi scraps and alfalfa pellets. Lots of papaya so there should
be good fungi
around. Add some humid acid and kelp extract right before application,
light amount.
Thanks

Hey Tom ---

Purple Cow compost is often good (85% of the time, I'd say) ---- good
fungi, protozoa, nematodes. They do have their "opps" composts though, so
getting the microscope out to check it is important. Also, storage
conditions can destroy the biology, so can't always blame the compost
maker......

the amount of time that has to go into compost tea is why I prefer to make
compost EXTRACT rather than tea. Basically, just extract the organisms
straight from the compost by vigorous massaging of the compost. Treat the
compost just exactly like a human muscle that is sore and needs a good
massage. No wringing, no sand paper motion, no scrubbing motions, just
massage. Vigorous massage. About 30 seconds for a pound of compost is
what is needed to extract the organisms. Then apply the compost extract.

Tea has to be made if the application is to establish the right sets of
organisms on the plant surfaces aboveground. The organisms need to be
growing, making glues and holding on instantly, in order to stick and stay
on the surfaces aboveground.

But when applied to soil, not necessary to instantly stick! So, compost
extract works fine, and less work.

so, I encourage you to make extracts when applying to most things --- soil,
water, compost, mulch, etc. Tea only if you have to deal with pests and
disease organisms on plant (or animal) surfaces.

Hi Elaine!

The prodigal son here again! Well nearly a year has passed and it’s time to
think about the conference season. I hope you are coming to LaCrosse again
this year.
I have an implanted pacemaker now and am much more able to get around. I
will be volunteering for the conference, it will be my first since losing
my health so I am VERY excited.

But all the drama aside I really wrote after reading your post on CT Yahoo.
Are you aware of any tested compost sold in the LaCrosse WI region? Anyone
testing around me? I made tea for a couple of season 7 years ago but
couldn’t keep up with the labor and never found any youngsters with enough
motivation to take over. Relegating the 25G brewer to my home garden. I’d
like to kick the tomatoes up next year and go back to CT. Sadly there is no
budget for testing but I still have all the materials from training and
access to a scope. I took excellent notes and saved every scrap of paper
and note and computer file.

I hope this finds you well and look forward to hearing from you. A beer and
hug in February would be better still.

Best wishes,

TD
