Hi Betsy...there is no rule..its "Common Sense" swales do not comply
everywhere. Look at and understand the principles in the needs you have of
how to channel and capture water for what purposes. Good swales are 300mm
deep and 3000m wide.

There are also vegetative swales. Using grass like vetiver as the ridge or
channel edge. Drains, terraces, weirs, cascades and a range of other
techniques could serve good purpose as well...or a diverse mixture
depending again on your need.

Perhaps you could invite a recognised and very well experienced Designer in
for a wknd wkshp and perhaps if smart enough design and build what you
ideally need and make a profit financially environmentally and community
wise.
