Greetings Lawrence,
I’m writing to let you know about Food First’s exciting upcoming delegation
to Cuba, highlighting the island’s revolutionary sustainable food and
farming systems, including agroecology and permaculture. I think your group
may be interested in this opportunity, so I’ve included some information
below for you to share through your online group.
The trip is organized by Food Sovereignty Tours, a project of Food
First/Institute for Food and Development Policy in Oakland, CA, called one
of the country’s “most established food think tanks” by the New York Times.
I am happy to provide additional information. Please consider sharing
information about this trip with your group through your online group, list
serv or events calendar. And do feel free to contact me with questions.
All the best,
Katie Brimm
Food Sovereignty Program Coordinator
*CUBA: Organic Revolution and Evolution
<http://www.foodsovereigntytours.org/international-tours/cuba/cuba/>*
*Dates: May 9-19th, 2014*
*Register soon, deadlines approaching*
*This special tour will precede the 10th International Conference on
Organic and Sustainable Agriculture organized by ACTAF*
Known for being frozen in time, Cuba is light years ahead of most of the
world in sustainable farming and agricultural self-reliance. Through its
Food Sovereignty Tours program, Oakland-based Food First offers the public
a unique opportunity to experience Cuba’s groundbreaking advances in
sustainable agriculture. The delegation will take place May 9-19, 2014.
You will get a general overview of Cuba’s agroecological transition and the
institutions and resources put into place to make this dramatic shift
possible. You will see firsthand what happens when national policy
prioritizes organic farming, and meet the farmers and agroecologists
working to make it happen.
Looking towards the future, this agricultural nation is in a time of
transition and reform. You will meet with the Ministry of Agriculture to
discuss what plans are in store for Cuba. We will also look at how the
island’s next generation of farmers, policy makers, and consumers view the
future of their food system and hear about Cuba from Cubans.
*Open to all individuals interested in Cuban agroecology, permaculture and
sustainable agriculture. To learn more, visit Food Sovereignty Tours online
