Tomorrow's table - GM promoters show why Monsanto's data is untrustworthy
Saturday, 22 May 2010 13:34
NOTE: As GM scientists go, Pamela Ronald's a spin doctor's dream, with her
marriage to an organic farmer with whom she's written a book promoting
genetic engineering as the way forward for sustainable agriculture -
Tomorrow's Table. That's probably why her blog of the same name is one of
just 4 "biotechnology blogs" promoted by Monsanto:
http://www.monsantoblog.com/
The following commentary's taken from the excellent newsletter of the
Australian women's NGO: MADGE. MADGE stands for Mothers Are Demystifying
Genetic Engineering, which perfectly describes what MADGE very successfully
do, as you'll see below.
Check out the MADGE site: http://www.madge.org.au, and it's also well worth
subscribing to their fortnightly digests because, although written from an
Australian angle, they contain many items of general interest, like the
following.
---
---
*Tomorrow's table - GM promoters show why Monsanto's data untrustworthy *
MADGE Digest No #107, May 22nd 2010 (item 6)
Pamela Ronald is a scientist who wrote a book with her organic farmer
husband suggesting that organic and GM could co-exist: *Tomorrow's Table:
Organic Farming, Genetics, and the Future of Food* by Pamela Ronald and
Raoul Adamchak.
A keen MADGE was recommended this book by Terry Redman the WA [Western
Australia] agriculture minister. She commented:
"As the author is a highly qualified scientist involved in University
research over many years, I expected to find in this chapter some
scientific studies and outcomes. But no! It is a folksy-philosophical
discussion about risk....the only sign of any numerical data and associated
process is in the quantities of ingredients and the numbered steps in the
four recipes she provides!"
MADGE Madeleine Love also read it. "The book could be subtitled 'Anne of
Green Gables shares a GM recipe with Biopirates'. Its full of sunlight
sparkling off the dew drops on GM corn on textured hillsides with gentle
breezes, interspersed with recipes and arguments for why it's silly that we
think GM food might be worth a concern."
Since WA ag minister, Terry Redman, told our WA MADGE the book "contains
guidance to help the public distinguish rumours from high quality science,"
MADGE decided to rate the GM canola Monsanto material, that FSANZ [Food
Standards Australia New Zealand] used for their food approval, against the
checklist in Chapter 6 of the book:
1.Examine the primary source of information (Yes, we've got the Monsanto GM
RR canola data and we've examined it.)
2.Ask if the work was published in a peer-reviewed journal. (No, after
approval the trout production study was written up for publication.)
3.Check if the journal has a good reputation. (No, the Monsanto material
wasn't published.)
4.Determine if there is an independent confirmation by another published
study. (No, the GM RR canola is a patented product and there was no
independent confirmation. FSANZ relied solely on material provided by
Monsanto.)
5.Assess whether a potential conflict of interest exists. (Yes, Monsanto is
presenting its own work to advocate for the safety of its own product.
Astoundingly the authors also say:
"If governmental regulators were to rely solely on data supplied by parties
whose primary concern is not the public good but private interest, then the
public would have reason to question the integrity of the research."
This is exactly why MADGE has been questioning the integrity of the
research.)
6.Assess the quality of institution or panel. (No journal, no panel, no
university - just Monsanto.)
7.Examine the reputation of the author. (Here is a list of some of
Monsanto's achievements:
*2002 found guilty of conduct "so outrageous in character and extreme in
degree as to go beyond all possible bounds of decency so as to be regarded
as atrocious and utterly intolerable in civilized
society<http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A54914-2002Feb22?language=printer>"
; Monsanto had released tons of PCBs into the city of Anniston and covered
up its actions for decades.

Any permies available to give a free talk, presentation, or class in a little
farming community in east TX? The town is Frost, which the person contacting
me described as "a little rural farming community in North Central Texas,
about 75 miles from Ft. Worth and about 40 miles from Waco between Waco and
Waxahachie, 20 miles from Corsicana. We are kind of in the middle and not
really close to anything."?

Sunscreens, lotions, and cosmetics contain tiny metal nanoparticles that
wash down the drain at the end of the day, or are discharged after
manufacturing. Those nanoparticles eventually end up in agricultural
soil, which is a cause for concern.

nanomaterial (MNM) environmental buildup could profoundly alter

involved growing plants to full maturity in MNM-contaminated field soil.
We have done so for soybean, a major global commodity crop, using farm
soil amended with two high-production metal oxide MNMs (nano-CeO2 and
-ZnO). The results provide a clear, but unfortunate, view of what could
arise over the long term: (i) for nano-ZnO, component metal was taken up
and distributed throughout edible plant tissues; (ii) for nano-CeO2,
plant growth and yield diminished, but also (iii) nitrogen fixation?a
major ecosystem service of leguminous crops?was shut down at high
nano-CeO2 concentration. Juxtaposed against widespread land application
of wastewater treatment biosolids to food crops, these findings forewarn
of agriculturally associated human and environmental risks from the
accelerating use of MNMs.

This is such and alarming and accurate article I thought I would Xpost
it here. There appears to be some ayn rand connection with ryan.
Anyone who thinks any rand is cool and therefore ryan must be cool too,
read the following article. Romney-Ryan will be bad news for the world
of permaculture, especially for those permaculturists trying to hang on
financially and stick with their committment to that lifestyle and
livlihood. Otherwise it will be the 60's revisited, tune in and drop
out, survive with help of others (those "others" do not include the
right wing). Don't bother turning on, a waste of time unless it is
through meditation (ever wonder why the Tibetan Buddhist Monks are so
important to world sanity?).

The Conservative Psyche: How Ordinary People Come to Embrace the Cruelty
of Paul Ryan and Other Right-Wingers
Scientific research into the way we think explains the reasons decent
people wind up supporting horrific policies.
August 19, 2012? |
Earlier this year, Democratic operatives looking for the best way to
define Mitt Romney discovered something interesting about Paul Ryan's
budget. The New York Times reported that when the details of his
proposals were run past focus groups, they found that the plan is so
cruel that voters ? simply refused to believe any politician would do
such a thing.?
In addition to phasing out the Earned Income Tax Credit that keeps
millions of American families above the poverty line and cutting funding
for children's healthcare in half, Jonathan Cohn described the ?America
that Paul Ryan envisions? like this:
? ? Many millions of working-age Americans would lose health insurance.
Senior citizens would anguish over whether to pay their rent or their
medical bills, in a way they haven?t since the 1960s. Government would
be so starved of resources that, by 2050, it wouldn?t have enough money
for core functions like food inspections and highway maintenance.

Hello fellow permies,
I am in the middle of co-teaching a year-long PDC course through Leon County
Extension in Tallahassee, Florida with an Extension Agent and two community
members who are PDC graduates. We are at the midway point in the course and
we would like to give the students and instructors in the course a survey to
help them gauge the degree to which their individual practices follow
Permaculture Ethics (Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share). In other words, we
hope to be able to evaluate if and how folks practice what they preach... how
people act upon their beliefs in permaculture philosophy and ethical
principles. We have been trying to look at sustainability metrics and
indicators out there to help us get the survey together, but we are
struggling to find them very useful in this instance. The social justice and
personal well-being dimensions are virtually absent from such indicators,
with their main focus being on ecological footprint.
I am wondering if any other instructors out there have done something similar
in their courses, and if so, if they are willing to share their survey
questions with us. I am hoping to eventually use this research instrument as
part of my PhD dissertation work.
Thank you,

Hi Wendi,
A fellow researcher at the University of Victoria just presented her paper on
levels of satisfaction in sustainable lifestyles - her work is titled "Inner
Sustainability: Exploring experiences of needs, satisfaction, and frustration
in sustainable lifestyle practices". This is very recent research and she
worked closely with the Transition community - her work may be of use to you.
Here is her contact amelnik@uvic.ca.
hope that helps!

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network & Surfers Without Borders Presents :
Integrating Animals in Permaculture Systems :
With Paul Wheaton from Missoula, Montana
Wednesday Sept 5 , 2012
7-9:30pm
Santa Barbara Central Library, Faulkner Gallery
$5 suggested donation
Join permaculture teacher and designer , Paul Wheaton, for an
evening talk on Wednesday, September 5, 7-9:30pm, about integrating
Animals in Permaculture Systems. Permaculture offers powerful tools for
the design of regenerative systems, with fair ways to provide food,
energy, and human livelihoods, while sharing the planet with the rest of
nature.
Paul starts with chickens, and spends a lot of time on them, not
only because they are such a common, or even entry-level livestock
critter to keep, but because he thoroughly explains pros and cons that
are not always considered. He evaluates all the different housing
techniques (including: free range, coop and run, Salatin-style pens,
chicken tractors, and paddock shift), feeding methods, predator issues,
caretaker effort required and more.
With every type of animal system, from chickens to goats, to cows, or
from chickens to cows and more, Paul focuses on (among other things):
* the most healthy way to grow each breed according to its unique
needs,
* how to grow all or most of the feed,
* minimizing predator problems, and
* how properly managed livestock and integrated animal systems
enhances your other "growies" (backyard gardens and small farms) or
integrated systems of agriculture.
Paul Wheaton is the tyrannical ruler of two on-line communities.
One about software engineering, the other, his true passion,
Permaculture "Permies.com" (largest on line Permaculture Site) . Paul
regularly uploads permaculture videos & podcasts for the permaculture
