One can make charcoal in a pyrolizer while cooking food, heating water or similar uses. And one can use grass from the current growing season or tree prunings and such from last year to do it. That process sequesters current or year-old carbon pulled from the atmosphere and sequesters it in the soil. You don't have to use old-growth trees. How scalable is this? Won't work for industrial ag scale but then industrial scale ag isn't sustainable anyway so you've lost nothing. The pyrolizer-on-current-year-growth method seems like a win win to me.

I like this but still think that charcoal burning is detrimental if we want
to stop climate change. We produce 20 times more CO2 while making charcoal
than we ever sequester whatever system we use. These days forest are already
disappearing to make charcoal and that is madness. Stopping burning fossil
fuels would be the only sure way combined with stopping deforestation. If
you want to sequester carbon then plant trees and shrubs, increase biomass.

That is permaculture or not?
