With all due respect, IMHO in the location you describe Kelda, I think I
would
feel the same as you do. I sincerely hope that you can get a great local
Farmer's Market started wherever you are (In Huntsville AL, the Dept of Ag
sponsors a kind of "indoor/outdoor flea market" of farmers where any local
grower can get a stall at no cost to sell the produce (And canned goods,
plants,
etc) *from their own farm only*; Maybe you could look Huntsville up on the
web,
find out how they got it organized and get your local branch of the USDA
involved in the solution? Just a thought...Hope it helps.

However, I live somewhere extremely different from that, in a highly
urbanized
metropolitan environment. Here natural food choices must be carefully sought
out from in between the covert-GMO, highly processed fast-nonfood and frozen
TV
Dinner stuff in the big chain groceries. IOW where many people think they're
'cooking' by adding water and ketchup to a mix which came out of a box, and
then
microwaving it to death.

So for where I am, Trader Joe's makes a good "middle ground bridge" for folks
to
begin a transition out of processed food delusions and into the natural
world.
Plus it makes the natural world interesting for them; 'Make it trendy and it
will spread'.

IMHO nothing is likely to be 'right' for all situations and environments;
Even
Nature evolves Microclimates. As above, so below, say I.

Someone posted about business ethics, also an important consideration for me,
so I vote with my $.
Yep, there is likely to be corporate canoodling in almost any corporation.
IMHO
TJ's seems to have less of it than, say (Pick your fave retail chain and
insert
name here) .

Namaste,

Linda

Subject: [permaculture] Trader Joe's

I'm with Amy. I live in a small town that doesn't have Co-ops, Farmer's
Markets, Whole Foods. People here are still in the beginnings of being
educated about sustainability.

I think that Trader Joe's is deceptive. When people here talk about
wanting one its because its 1) cheap (which is true) 2) organic 3)
sustainable.
In reality it is not really organic, sustainable, or to add another
important category, local.

I would rather our town talk about how to start a small independent food
store, or how to start a Farmer's Market, and I feel that a TJ here would
divert that energy elsewhere and the conversation would be over. Trader
Joe's has a reputation for being 'green' without actually doing the
legwork.

I'm going to keep on talking to my neighbors about truly sustainable
options. Trader Joe's doesn't get my money or my attention.

I am a big fan of TJ's. To me it is a community place, where I get to sample
foods, go to the restroom, and talk to friends. Their food is great, and I
can buy there anything I need except for local organic veggis which I buy at
the farmers market, Whole Foods, or Lazy Acres.
The farmers market here in Santa Barbara is very expensive. I like TJ as a
substitute for the horrendous food markets like Vons, Albertson's, Ralphs
etc with their plastic food. I think it is great that TJ has now become so
big that it can compete with these chains. They have a great selection of
pre-prepped foods, and since I am single and working all day, I like also to
prepare those kinds of meals at night. I am not a complete whole food person
and TJ provides me with affordable food like good bread, nice jam, tofu
wiener's, pizza, greek feta cheese, greek joghurt, orange juice, eggs,
toilet paper, shampoo and conditioner, handwash lotion, olive oil, veggi
chili, indian precooked meals etc. I cannot buy this at the farmer's market
and the local food coop is too expensive for me...
Just my 5 cents,
Tanja
