I know that some mycologists are pretty gung-ho about cleaning up livestock
runoff with straw and mushroom swales.  Can't remember the species right off
the top of my head, but Paul Stamets at least has had some notable success
with this.  I think it could be an extremely appropriate method for this
particular application.

Amish Farming Draws Rare Government Scrutiny - NYTimes.com
www.nytimes.com
Some agricultural practices of the Amish, chiefly involving manure
runoff, may be destructive to the environment.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/09/science/earth/09amish.html
<a snippet>
"But farmers like Mr. Stoltzfus are facing growing scrutiny for
agricultural practices that the federal government sees as
environmentally destructive. Their cows generate heaps of manure that
easily washes into streams and flows onward into the Chesapeake Bay.

And the Environmental Protection Agency, charged by President Obama with
restoring the bay to health, is determined to crack down. The farmers
have a choice: change the way they farm or face stiff penalties."

My comment:
-----------
If there really is an issue with manure-based runoff leaving
Amish properties, that problem can be easily fixed with an investment in
grading land and limited terraforming, channeling and impounding water,
cover cropping, catch cropping, strip cropping, forest and perennial
farming, constructed wetlands and aquaculture, all as intergrated
systems utilizing the best permaculture methods. Their limited use of
mechanization may present problems that would not exist for conventional
farmers. - LL

Anyone else have any suggestions for these Amish farmers?

Patrick, I'm curious, do you think that New Urbanism and permaculture are
intersecting disciplines?  Isn't the New Urbanism movement more of a
top-down, long-term planning approach to the "horror" of suburban sprawl?  I
personally prefer what David Holmgren has to say on the matter of suburban
endurance.  If you haven't seen this, it's worth a look!

This is a lengthy talk on urban design (pretty much zonation) in relation to
Ag. I love listening to this guy.

oh, thanks. Very nice there.
I was stimulated to ask, because it occurred to me, relative to your last
posting, that it would be cool to create a 'meetup' here in Charleston where
people could exchange ideas and information about permaculture.

Meetups can also take place as conference calls, which opens them up to
non-local membership.
Are you familiar with meetups?
Just an idea for collective sharing.

Thanks for all you do.
