i've been looking into aquaponics for a little while, and it does seem
interesting, although, on top of all the cons you mentioned (jamesdavid),
i'd add: accounting for the embodied energy in the tanks pumps etc., as
well as complexity of upkeep/operation and sparcity of natural connections
between components, both which i think make it fragile. seems like for the
kind of fragility involved it may not be worth it unless water is extremely
scarce, like in desert conditions.

as far as i gather, nobody is doing 100% sustainable fish feed, at least
with omnivorous & carnivorous fish species. i think it's really difficult to
get the right proteins in the right proportions without inputs from pretty
nasty fishing operations.

i just have a feeling a well managed fish pond, perhaps with attendant
perennials
to soak up spare ammonia, could produce perhaps less output, but have fewer
inputs & labor, and be much more robust.

there's some great info on this site with good stuff on black soldier fly
larvae,
which imho could be useful in all sorts of permaculture setups, including
use as chicken or even reptile feed (i'm currently waiting for my BSFL bin
to be
colonized). what i like about his blog is that he tells it like it is, and
basically says
how difficult aquaponics is, as opposed to it's usual treatment as a magical
nirvana.
make sure to look at the microponics tagged articles, as they are especially
relevant to pc:

this guy also seems to be doing some interesting things with vermiponics,
and what he calls vaquaculture:
