You could do worse than get in touch with these folks:

Urban Food is the website for the UC Berkeley project that you might
be interested in. Planting Justice is an Oakland organization working
on sustainable urban agriculture and food justice for poor people.
Either could definitely be worked into a social geography thesis, but
physical geography might be less easy. But perhaps the people involved
can point you in the right direction.

I don't know of research going on in Canada right now, though.
Hopefully someone else on the list can help you more with that.
