I can't speak on canning, but when we stumbled upon an abundant patch last
year we made "fruit leather" and dried it in the dehydrator. It kept really
well. Perfect for hiking or traveling.

Does anyone know whether pawpaws can be grown in coastal British
Columbia? Thanks, Jon

I expect that pawpaws can be grown in coastal BC.

Here in the Niagara Peninsula below the escarpment where they are
native, our historic low winter temperatures are about minus 15 degrees
Fahrenheit. Pawpaw is also somewhat of an understory tree. It grows in
full sun where there is wind shelter. It likes bottomland with good soil
moisture. The only problem that I can see is that it is adapted to areas
with warm summers, 3000 corn heat units annually may be on the low side.
I speculate that cooler areas might suffer in fruit productivity.
I expect that fruit productivity would be highest with plenty of sun.

Seedlings in their first couple of years demand either part shade or
*plenty* of water.

From reading, apparently pawpaws prefer soil that is slightly acid. Our
topsoil where I am fulfils this requirement. My experience with them is
on sandy loam.

See
http://www.grimonut.com .

They have sold only seedling pawpaws recently, but Ernie Grimo told me
earlier this year that he hopes to have grafted pawpaw cultivars
available soon.
