Robyn.  That is probably a great book.  Unfortunately, the first paragraph I
chanced on appears to be complete nonsense. In the chapter on “Optimisation”,
John Naish writes:

“The constant, all-consuming pursuit of ‘more’ is only a recent phenomenon.
From the dawn of civilisation until shortly after the Second World War, it
was considered admirable in Western culture to know when you had enough of
any particular thing, … “

As proof of which he cites an Edwardian table saying, some quotes from
Aristotle, Lao Tsu, Calvin and the like.  My impression is that Mr. Naish
pieces together sundry fragments of writings to make the point he set himself
for this particular assignment without any regard for the real World.  People
always strove to “get more”; in the past probably even with less compunction
and bad conscience than we do today.  Even the Christian dictum about the
camel marching through the hole of needle, didn’t prevent Christians all
through the ages to grab all they could and be it at the expense of their
fellow beings.  The major difference with the present situation is that,
today, we have the technical means to do it on a scale our forefathers
couldn’t have imagined in their wildest dreams.

I think, the basic problem is that our moral standards have not increased in
proportion with our technical means.  To piece together some writings about
an imaginary Golden Past may be personally satisfying to Mr. Naish, I doubt
that it will go to create a new awareness necessary to cope with future
problems.

Unappreciated Fruits Seminar
Oct 8-10
Corvallis, OR
USDA Germplasm Repository

This has to be one the most poorly titled conferences yet. I reckon the old
timer grafter contingent will be there in full force with Oakland Raider
Fan-esque enthusiasm for Pawpaws and other such underdog fruit species.

Is anyone planning on attending?

Dieter -

You criticize John Naish for not citing credible evidence.
You cite none. Why should we be convinced by you, and not him?
