Thanks Robin!

Won’t they sting me if I try to scoop them up?  Do I need protective clothing
to do that?

My dad collects bee swarms and i've helped him a few times. Generally a
swarm is relatively easy to relocate into a bee box but they need to be
settled on something (accessible/within reach) to get them and not flying
around. Between flights they usually settle in a big clump on a post or
branch of a tree for a few hours and you simply pick up the 'clump' of
bees
and put them into the box. My dad just uses an empty 4 litre ice cream tub
to scoop them up and put them in the box. If youre lucky and get the queen
bee in the first scoop the rest will automatically follow her into the hive.
Bees will settle down more quickly in their new hive if you rub the inside
with Lemon Balm leaves (Mellissa officinalis).
Ciao

Yes, you need leather gloves, bee veil and the usual protective beekeeping
gear and appropriate clothing. It's best to already have some experience
working with bees before attempting to collect a swarm. There's a lot of
very important little do's and don't's when it comes to handling bees, the
last thing you'd want would be a whole swarm of bees attacking you cos you
upset them. Robyn
