Hi Suraj,
I've been to India many times but never to the south; I hope to fix that next
trip, the south is very beautiful... There is a video online that you might
be interested in - it is of Emelia Hazelip describing Synergistic Gardening
which she developed from the principles of Masanobu Fukuoka. She used no
tilling, machines, or input other than mulch but built up very high raised
beds which she kept permanently mulched, and used composting in place. The
film is in several parts on Youtube (in English although the subtitles are in
French), or the entire video is available as a torrent.

Hello!
I'm relatively new to permaculture and I'm pretty new to this list as
well (joined about a week ago). Infact, I haven't even been able to
read in depth about permaculture except through wikipedia and such
online resources. I've just placed an order for Holmgren's
Permaculture book from Amazon. Besides that, I can only say I'm fairly
worried about the future given the multitude of crises humanity as a
whole is facing on this planet (warming, energy crisis, resource
depletion, etc.,.). I'm from India and permaculture seems to be a
thing of the 'past'. Yes, of the past. I can find news items on the
web about permaculture-related stuff from the past but I see none at
present. Nor do I know of anyone who is interested / practising
permaculture.
So, the purpose of this mail is to see if there is anyone from India
out here talking / doing permaculture.
Secondly, I recently read about a practice called 'Zero farming'
which, given the lack of information about what it exactly is about,
makes me think its very similar to Permaculture. Maybe not 'as
inspired by nature' as Permaculture, but quite close in practice.
Here's an article I found related to this:
http://www.theacademyofnaturalfarming.com/Zerofarm.html
I'm planning to buy some farmland (2 or 3 acres) down south in India
(Tamil Nadu) and keep buying additional land as I save up more money.
To begin with, I plan to stay employed the way I am employed because I
need a regular salary and have the land taken care of using a friend's
friend who has been a farmer for generations. The idea is to gradually
become less dependent on my salary and be able to smoothly transition
to doing agriculture (permaculture :) ) on this land. So, short term:
I'm trying to devise ways to reduce my time spent in my current job
and gradually start visiting this land and thereby understand
agriculture. Given I'm going to buy land, is there any specific /
general piece of advise that pops up in your head? If there is anybody
out here from India (I'm in Bangalore) who would like to experiment
permaculture on a small portion of my land, I'd definitely welcome you
to join me in the experiments :)
I'm hoping to learn from the collective knowledge of this community :)
Cheers,
-Suraj

Dear All, along with and some other massages in this thread, there is a
misunderstanding about the work of Masanobu Fukuoka. On seeing Emilia's
video he is said to have commented : I do not know why this woman calls
herself a follower of mine.
Does it matter that he said this or not?
Emilia's video is targeted at temperate climate agriculture, and I do not
know if there's any cross fertilisation with Indian farming. I have been
part of this email list and the Fukuoka_Farming list at Yahoo.com for long
enough to know that there are many Indian farmers following the way of
Fukuoka so that there is no need to follow styles that are based on
temperate, European, North American approaches.
The one point that Fukuoka insisted on that is worth mentioning here is that
nature, wherever it is, is always capable of producing the maximum possible
harvest under the form of natural farming, and this will always equal or
surpass conventional agriculture in the medium to long term.
I have been developing Emilia's techniques and also those of Marc Bonfils,
of whom Emilia was also a student, across the last several years and I would
be very happy to offer courses to explain in simple, practical terms of how
this is possible in vegetable, cereal and fruit tree agriculture to anyone
who is interested in making Fukuoka's ideas become real.
Fukuoka is 95 years old and has recently suffered from a stroke and is no
longer able to travel and speak about his approach, but there is a new
generation who have been inspired by his example who would like to continue
his work.
I hope this helps
Jamie
