>I've seen a episode of "Bioneers: Saving The Planet" where a renowned
Mycologist showed using compost and added fungi to de-comtaminate soil
soaked in fuel oil.

Paul Stamets
(ends in S, not a Z, for library searches. he has about 5 books out.
Presently working in a research foundation in Wa.) He is considered
North America's foremost practicing scholar in this arena. Bppks
include growing in general, then medicinal types, etc. Soil remediation
he does is impressive.

I'm a CA state plant engineering operator. and own a mushroom list.
Sludge is considered a concentrate, and may be so, that it does not
flow.
It ought not smell if aerated. Deptic sludge smells. So does the bottom
of some pond mud. Lack of oxygen promotes a different type of bacteria.
baby diapers smell 10x worse that properly aerated sludge.
End of story.

Heavy metals are an issue. Samples are taken by intervals of influents.
The machines are both stationary and portable. Plants have samples
tested by state certified outside labs for metals. Surprise testing
and blind lab tests are be done to assure no funny stuff also. At issue
might be allowed state levels for the compost. Many of us drink water
from copper pipes.

Copper has a limit and is a serious issue as they
must discharge water, once removed from the sludge, to receiving
waters very often. Copper reduces fungii activity, and while considered
a fertility metal, is actually the opposite. Yet, we need a bit. So
if a meyal shows up, painful steps are taken to mitigate it, and the
culprit traced down and made to pay. Samplers tell what part
of town it came from. Inspectors know what businesses produce
waste of what types and how much. the businesses also must
apply to discharge ANYthing, and extimate, with formulas, evidences,
the proposed amounts, before any discharge begins, which is part of
the business license.

Now, smile... Radioactive waste can leave on a truck, and arrive to
be "diluted" and incorporated into composts etc, legally. Note,
composts, save for bacteria and metals that must be tested for
and reported to the state, need not post on the labels anything
under 1/2%. Expensive Scott's seed planting mixl might easily be
one of the companies doing this, legally, and you cannot find out.

The old saying, politically incorrect as of a decade + ago, was,
and I quote official literature, "The solution to pollution is
dilution."
Got a bad tank? Contaminated? Just slowly leak it out with all the
good stuff, and stay under the "reportable" limit. Not supposed
to do that nowadays... Mind what you flush, folks.

Happy Hollerdays,
& Grow ON!
