I might suggest taking a look at Paul Stamets' book "Mycelium
Running." I recall that he writes some about insecticidal or
insect-deterring fungi that you might be able to innoculate mulch
with. Depending on what innoculant you end up using, you'd likely end
up making the products of the mulch decomposition more usable for your
plants as well.
