I have had an equally bad experience with a tumbler type composter. I have
added inordinate amounts of carbon and it was still aneorobic. I am back to
composting in bins where I layer kitchen waste with newspaper, cardboard, and
other brown stuff and sit back and let the worms do the work.

I have used these things off an on over the years.

On the farm, with a good farm eco system, there is no need for
composting. So I didn't do any there.

But in the city, a good composter can very useful.

There are two things in your message that make me think that the
problem isn't the contraption - it's the compost ingredients. If
there is any less-than-earthy smell, you don't have enough carbons.
Also, if it is "gloppy" it is probably too wet. The moisture level
should be that of a well wrung out sponge.
