That should read " _Canada_ has 8 years of proven gas reserves." Not the
whole world, and they give no data to support the claim nor do they give its
source. I'm definitely on the Peak Oil wagon, but A) I need sources to
believe a claim like this and B) numbers of proven reserves have a habit of
not decreasing much over time since there are still unproven reserves out
there (though always fewer as time goes by). I remember reading 20 years ago
that we had only 25 years of oil left. Now they say we've got 40-100,
depending on who you talk to.

Also, the article uses an alarmist tactic in its statistics. It says global
energy use is up by 165% in 40 years. Sounds like a lot when put that way,
but that's a little more than 2% growth per year, less than world population
growth over that time. It also ignores the decline in energy growth from 6%
per year before 1973 to an average of 1.5% since then.

I'm not a cornucopian, but I like to see honesty with numbers, instead of
preying upon most people's math ignorance. Life is scary enough without
deliberate scare tactics.
