Hello Friends,
As you all have probably heard... There is currently major flooding going on
in many towns to the north of Boston in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and
Maine. There are dams that may burst overnight, sewage plants have been
flooded and hundreds of millions of gallons of toxic sewage are flowing into
the Merrimack River Watershed; residential areas are losing power and
drinkable water.
THIS IS A CALL FOR HELP AND SOLIDARITY!
We are three activists from the area and we have formed a collective called
Waters Rising, to coordinate resources volunteers who want to help with flood
relief over the next couple of days and weeks. We are not starting a new
organization, but rather helping with coordination, and funneling volunteers
and resources to already-existing grassroots community groups in the local
areas most affected. If you can help, with either your time or with
resources/donations, etc. please call us at 978.470.2354 or 617.921.8209 or
email newenglandfloodrelief@yahoo.com. We are basing our operations out of a
house in Andover, MA and we can provide housing and food for volunteers here.
We've been contacting community groups in Lawrence, Peabody, Methuen and
Lowell this morning to figure out what is needed. Right we are heading out to
scout the area, check in with a flooded shelter and the evacuation
shelters (mostly local high schools).
The recent history of Hurricane Katrina has shown us that government relief
is unreliable and often divided along racial and economic lines. It is our
responsibility as activists and allies in Boston to take action NOW and get
involved in the emergency-response, rebuilding, and relief efforts with
grassroots community groups in the area. Whether or not you have medical or
emergency response skills, there will be plenty of clean-up, distribution,
coordination and general aid work to do. Give us a call!
