Los Angeles Indymedia has this update: "UPDATE: Deputy Mayor Frank
issued his assurances that the Mayorâs office is working to prevent the
eviction. They are currently working to get a contract option agreement with
the developer, Ralph Horowitz. He stated that Horowitz is asking for $16.35
million for the land. To date $6 million has been raised from a private donor
and the Trust for Public Land has put forth $3 million. The contract option
would give 30 days for the remaining funds to be found and forestall the
pending eviction." Report with audio: South Central Farmers visit mayor's
office
So it's not a matter of finding an alternative space for the
farmers -- which would inevitably be smaller and of lesser
quality (e.g. this has happened numerous times to community
gardeners in the South Bronx of NYC) -- but of demanding
that the City follow through with action to prevent the eviction...

Here's what I came up with, in just a few minutes, and would appreciate
feedback. Thanks.
Hello Mayor,
Some of us choose to ignore the increasingly negative consequences of
participating in an oil-dominated "petrodollar" economy, e.g. to believe
that we have survived the recent tripling of world oil prices. This
"optimism" enables us to restart the status quo economic model, i.e. the
model as it existed since the end of WWII. But the source of cheap
labour has merely moved offshore, i.e. with regards to China, Viet Nam
is now the place for "hot" money.
In snow-bound Canada, L.A. is visualized as a tropical zone with a "life
is a beach" lifestyle. Don't be fooled. The Walmarts of this world would
sell even the beach sand that we share in common.
Refuse to sacrifice the diverse, long term benefits of city gardening in
favor of allowing Walmart to prosper. Please find an alternative space
for the southcentral families or leave them alone.
Thank You,
George

figures pounding corn and laying strips of venison on the empty car pool
lane of some abandoned superhighway." Fight Club
