Apparently they are quite a fundamantal and recurring pattern.... I've heard say ( pure hearsay) that tests were run in which dishes with sand in them take on mandala shapes when vibrated by the sound of "balanced and harmonious" Tibetan chanting ( has to do with acoustics of hall as well)....
