David, one way of softening is to distillation. But distillers can be expensive and use electricity. My husband and I came across a cheap and simple distiller, the Water Cone. It's meant for obtaining potable water from sea or brackish waters in the 3rd world countries but the concept can be apllied for watering houseplants here. The web site www.watercone.com
We haven't purchased one ourselves yet but are planning on writing the company to see if we can. If they only sell in bulk maybe some of the people on this board would like to get together and by a box?

Hello David,

Where are you, what minerals are in the water, and how did you deduce
that your plants are "sensitive" to the water?

Hi everyone,

I have indoor plants that are sensitive to the hard water of my area.
All water softening methods I've looked at involve either machinery or the
addition of salts. Under ideal circumstances I would just collect rainwater,
but this is prohibited by my current living situation. Are there any natural
and environmentally friendly ways of softening water?

much thanks

David Travis

Besides sodium chloride, one can soften with potassium chloride - still
contains chloride, but it's not so harmful to houseplants. You might look up solar distillation; seems I've seen really simple systems, although I'm not sure of the volume of water you'd get (and if you can't collect rainwater, this may not work either).
