I tried both ways last year (rather later in the season... late
spring, as I recall) and the ones directly planted did a better
(though to be honest I haven't actually harvested under either plant
yet). They are supposed to be able to keep in the ground all winter,
so it's probably fine to plant now if you mulch well.
