I will second everything that David said about the freecycle list. I am on the SW Missouri one, and am amazed at the stuff that gets passed around and kept out of the dump. Once you give something to someone else, you start looking for other things to give. It works great!

I am list owner for the Dallas/Fort Worth Freecycle Network
(dfwfreecycle) on Yahoo Groups. It is a part of the Freecycle
movement...see www.freecycle.org

This exists to divert "stuff" that is no longer wanted or needed from
winding up in the landfills by giving it freely to someone else who
wants it.

We have had exchanges ranging from the smallest of items up to and
including vehicles, appliances, furniture of all sorts--and in several
occasions on other lists--houses!

Obviously, every time someone gets such a gift from another person, it
also stops yet another "thing" from being bought.

An additional benefit is that people begin to feel less isolated--to
realize that there is an ocean of generosity around all of us, if only
we know to look.

We have quite a few on my list that are in dire straits financially,
but many others who are not at all. They share an appreciation for
reuse rather than throwing things away...and the donors are usually
just as happy as the recipients, as they find out how good it feels to
be rid of items that were taking space and adding to the feelings of
being weighed down by possessions.

If you are interested in this movement, there are lists of approved
groups at www.freecycle.org.

Nothing on the lists may be offered or sought for money or other
compensation...everything must be completely free of obligation or
compensation. While there are plenty of people who join to "get free
stuff"--it is amazing to observe how so many of them begin to see the
happiness on the part of the donors, and then *they* begin to want
some of the same happiness--and look for things they can pass on to
others themselves!

Pardon me if this is off topic, but given the values of the members of
this list I thought I would suggest you explore it if you have not
already done so.

Regards,

David
