Hi Claude & others,
thanks for your comments. There were a few refernences on the web suggesting that any time you cause damage to asbestos shingles, that the fibres get airborne and can be inhaled and stay in your lungs. This can apparently cause long term problems. I just don't know what exactly an asbestos fibre is. Can anyone help?
Selwyn
I had asbestos shingles on my roof - My ( limited) understanding is that asbestos is only a problem when it is "friable" ( loose, dusty) - the shingles though are solid so unless it is a reckless wrecking crew, it should be ok - just make sure they know what they are doing.

Hi All,
I am looking into buying a small urban organic farm in Austin. The farmhouse has some asbestos shingle (outer covering of the house) which is being replaced. If the asbestos fibres get onto the soil, it is possible to get them airborne where they can be inhaled by people and animals which can cause health problems. Does anyone have any idea if this stuff will eventually break down or if it will in any way affect plants or wildlife if left in the soil? Can it be composted?
thanks for your input
